The legendary dirt ½ mile oval nestled along NYS Route 20 halfway between Pittsfield, MA and Albany, NY came to life once again this past Saturday with the sound and smells of high powered dirt Modifieds. And once again, the 20H of Brett Hearn donned victory lane in the Big Block Mods. Tyler Dippel took the Small Blocks, Whitey Slavin scored the Sportsman win, and Victor Hopkins took the checkers in Pro Stocks.
August is the time in the season when the battle for points championships start shaping up in every division. With only a handful of races left to score as many points as possible, every finishing position is essential to making a run at a title.
For the past 2 weeks though, maximum points is what Brett Hearn drives for, and has gotten, would three in a row be in the cards? At the drop of the green, the 11A of Kyle Armstrong took over the top spot from the 1x of Denny Soltis and built up some space over the rest of the field.
But much like the previous 2 weeks, the 20H of Hearn was charging through the field. Methodically taking each position, until lap 17, when Armstrong fell victim to mechanical issues, giving Hearn the opening he needed to cap off another win.
At the checkers, Hearn scored his 4th win of the season, and his 850th career win, with J.R. Heffner finishing 2nd. Kyle Sheldon battled his way to 3rd followed by Kyle Hoffman and Donnie Corellis.
The Small Block Mods had their 20 lap feature at the end of the night, but it certainly wasn’t for lack of action. A 3 way battle up front in the closing laps finally was resolved with only 3 laps left in the race as Tyler Dipple powered his 1t from 3rd to 1st and to the win.
Closing fast but settling for 2nd was Wayne Jelley. Brian Sandstedt held on the finish 3rd followed by Art Collins and Ryan Darcy.
The 20 lap Budget Sportsman saw the 53 of Whitey Slavin jump to the lead by lap 4. Even a late race charge by the 20JR of Matt Pappa was not going to keep Slavin from scoring the victory. Following Pappa was Michael Sabia for 3rd, Jeff Watson finished 4th, and Peter Carlotto rounded out the top 5.
The Pro Stock full fendered feature saw a lap 1 tangle in turn 1 collecting a handful of cars. But that didn’t slow the 243 of Victor Hopkins as he swung past the slowing 315 of Jon Routhier to take over the top spot on lap 4.
That was all he needed, as Hopkins clicked off the remaining 16 circuits to take the win. Robbie Speed battled to finish 2nd over Jay Corbin. Rob Yetman and Nick Hilt rounded out the top 5 finishers.
Earlier on the night, the Purestocks completed their feature events. Hunter Sanchez scored the win in Purestock 1, while Jesse Murphy took the checkers in PS 2. In Purestock 3, Jeff Kreutzinger held on for the win.
Next Saturday night, Congressman Chris Gibson and Senator Kathy Marchione along with Thermo Control Wood Boilers present a special 25 Lap Jim Langenback Pro Stock Memorial presented by LaRochelle Autobody and Restoration. Also all weekly divisions plus 4 cylinders will be on tap.
Then it’s the big one, Upstate GM Dealers and Hoosier Tire present the $17,500 Mr. DIRT Track U.S.A. 100 Lap Super DIRTCar Modified Series Event on Thursday August 14th! The winner also gets an automatic 8th starting spot in the big Eastern States Weekend later in the year, plus the Sportsman. You are not gonna want to miss this spectacular event.
