Mr. DIRT Track USA 2013

The legendary Lebanon Valley Speedway nestled along NY State Route 20 halfway between Albany NY and Pittsfield MA was at full capacity this past Thursday for the much anticipated Mr. DIRT Track U.S.A. 100 Lap DIRTCar Series race.  With an amazing $17,500 on the line provided by Gendron’s Truck Center and Hoosier Tire, the best of the best were at the Valley of Speed.

However, they needed to go through a Valley regular, the ‘Wild Child’ to take the dough!  Right from the start of the night, Andy Bachetti’s #34B was zeroed in on one thing, go fast!  From the heat races, to the draw, and all the way through 100 grueling laps on the high banks, Bachetti showed he was the man to beat.

At the point, Bachetti took control of the field when the green flag flew.  Caution on lap 5 for he #5 of Jimmy Horton with a flat left rear slowed the field, he would continue after a brief pit stop.  The caution flew again on lap 18 for the #57 of last Saturday’s winner Donnie Corellis as he made contact with the #77F of Keith Flach, and the wall, ending his night.

Then caution flew again on lap 28 for the #20H of Brett Hearn for a left rear flat, then again on lap 42 of the #11A of Kyle Armstrong with mechanical troubles.

All the while, Bachetti was maintaining his command of the field on each of the ensuing restarts.  Also holding court up front was a couple of Valley Regulars as well.  J.R. Heffner was biding his time sitting in the 2nd position, Kolby Schroder was hanging tough in 3rd, and Kenny Tremont Jr was making his way into the foray by the halfway point.

Tremont’s night would end by lap 67 with engine issues, and Schroder’s hot rod began to suffer handling issues in the 2nd half of the race.  But all eyes were on the#34B out front, and a hard charging #20H out back.

After making a right front tire change under caution on lap 67, Hearn began to charge back through the field, cracking the top 10 by lap 74 as the caution flew again.  The #711 of JaMike Sowle was being driven by Stewart Friesen, and he too suffered engine issues.

But it was clear to everyone that Bachetti was going to be the man to beat.  And in the closing laps, no one had anything for Bachetti, as the checks flew; Andy Bachetti dominated all 100 laps, capturing the title of 2013 Mr. DIRT Track U.S.A. and the check for $17,500.

Following the #34B was Heffner followed by Hearn.  Billy Dunn charged his way into 4th and Schroder held on for 5th.  Jimmy Phelps, Jimmy Burns, Matt Sheppard, Danny Johnson and Peter Britten rounded out the top 10 finishers.

Earlier in the night, the 20 lap Budget Sportsman feature took to the high banks.  Out front from the get go was the #20JR of Matt Pappa.  This was a caution plagued event, but Pappa held strong out front.

But in the closing laps, Pete Carlotto challenged Pappa for the top spot, keeping the pressure on.  On the last lap, Carlotto made the move to the high side coming out of turn 4, and momentum carried him all the way to the checkers, and the win!

Pete Carlotto scored the Sowle Enterprises $1,000 win by a mere .02 seconds over Pappa.  Tyler Dippel finished 3rd, Michael Sabia finished 4th, and Tommy Johnson finished 5th.  Ray Hall Jr, Alan Houghtaling, Brian Krummel, Brian Peterson, and Timothy Davis rounded out the top 10 finishers.

With Mr. DIRT in the books, it’s back to regular Saturday Night racing at the Valley of Speed.  Abele Tractor and Empire Chemical present Bedell Race Engines $1,000 small Block Feature and all other Weekly divisions, including the 4 Cylinders.
