Steve Hough Captures July 4th Spectacular! Houghtaling and LaRochelle Score Feature Wins
Saturday July 4th, 2009
By: Rodney Rescott

Berkshire Bank pulled out all the stops for a 4th of July spectacular at the legendary valley of Speed! The racing action on the speedway was fast and furious to match the fireworks in the sky.

Just before the sun set in the western skies, the Pure Stocks completed their night of racing. Is Pure Stock #1 Lou Ganczar score the win, in Pure Stock #2 say Dave Sickles score the win in a wild one that saw the #84P of Scott Morris take a violent flip down the front stretch. Morris was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with an injury to his shoulder. Then in Pure Stock #3, Phil Wood captured the win.

The mighty high banks then prepared for the big block Modifieds for their 30 lap feature event. At the point early was Matt Quinn’s #20Q as the field tore into the first turn. The entire field was dodging and weaving while trying to settle into their racing positions.

Kenny Tremont Jr, Andy Bachetti, and Donnie Corellis were charging through thee field trying to get to the head of the class. But up front, Quinn’s lead soon faded as the #34H of Steve Hough powered by on the top side and took over the lead.

Hough charged out a commanding lead, while eyes were set on the #43 of Keith Flach as he darted from his 8th starting spot to runner up by lap 6. Once Flach cleared Quinn, he set sail for Hough. He drove the wheels off the #43 as he reeled in the #34H and got within two car lengths by the halfway mark.

Back in the field, the track has proved to be the ultimate equalizer as Tremont, Bachetti, Corellis and others struggled to gain positions and make a charge for the front. Back at the front of the field, Hough could not be held back even in heavy lap traffic.

At the checkers, Hough scores his first win in 2009 in the caution free 30 lap feature. Flach had to settle for 2nd, as Brian Berger steadily advanced to 3rd, Guy Sheldon was scored 4th, while Eddie Marshall finished 5th.

The 20 lap Pro Stock feature started with the #93 of Jay Casey and the #17 of Nick Hilt on the front row. Casey took the lead early, but the #78 of Paul LaRochelle charged from 7th to take the lead by lap 6.

The field settled in to a nose to tail drafting pack until the halfway mark as Jay Corbin, Robbie Speed and Jason Casey began to make their charge. The only caution flew on lap 15 for a drive shaft in turn 3. Then on the restart, LaRochelle charged out again, but didn’t get too far away this time from Casey.

Jason Casey put his #324 into 2nd, but that as close as he was gonna get as Paul LaRochelle scores his first in of 2009 as well.

Jason Casey crossed the line 2nd, followed by Jay Casey, Jay Corbin, and Robbie Speed to round out the top 5.

The Sportsman 20 lap feature proved to be the show of the night as Jeff Kelly and Brett Haas brought the field to life as the green flag dropped. Haas took control of the field early as Kelly faded with handling issues. The first caution flew on lap 3 for heavy contract between the #3 of Kim Herrick and the #63 of point leader Danny Sanchez. The #63 had severe damage as was done for the night, while the #3 returned with just minor damage at the rear of the field.

Chad Pierce was now at the point on the subsequent restart. Caution flew ago for the #34 going around in turn 4. Pierce took control again for the next handful of circuits. Back in the field, Kyle Hoffman and Neil Stratton were piecing together a charge to the front of the field. But by lap 11, Alan Houghtaling darted from 2nd to first with a power move past Pierce in turn 3.

Once Houghtaling got his #250 out front, he checked out on the field. Hoffman and Stratton made a run of their own, but it just wasn’t going to be enough as Houghtaling scores his 2nd win of 2009. Neil Stratton charged to finish in 2nd, followed by Hoffman, Pierce, and Brian Sandstedt snuck in to complete the top 5.

Freihofer’s and Sabic Innovative are presenting a special 20 lap Pure Stock Shootout! All classes will be on tap for another full night of racing action and the legendary high banks at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
